What the dMAT is and who needs it
The dMAT is a digital study aptitude test used for admission of international applicants to Master's programmes in Germany. According to the official dMAT website, from 2026 it is part of the APS documentation process for graduates of Indian universities. Confirm your own case on the official dMAT site and with APS India, because requirements depend on your degree and intake.

Who needs the dMAT
APS India states that the dMAT applies to Master's applicants from India whose previous degree falls in one of these fields:
- Engineering
- Commerce, Accounting, Finance, Economics
- Business / Management
It is required for the summer semester 2027 intake and later intakes. APS India also lists exemptions: applicants who completed their APS online registration before 29 June 2026 or shipped their complete APS application documents before that date, and officially confirmed exchange, double-degree or university partnership programmes. Bachelor's and PhD applicants are not covered by the current rule.
The Core Module task types
Figure sequences
You see several grids in sequence. Each symbol follows its own rule - it moves, rotates or changes colour - and you predict the next matrices. The official materials state that a figure cannot switch from a diagonal movement to another type of movement, that figures either bounce off an edge or travel along the border, and that a change can grow step by step (the x + 1 rule). The practical technique is to solve one symbol at a time and say its rule as a sentence.
Mathematical equations
A small system of equations where each letter is a whole number between 1 and 20 and exactly one solution exists. Substitution beats algebra: find the equation that already gives a value or a direct relation, then push it through the others. The 1-20 range is your error check.
Latin squares
A 5x5 grid where each letter appears once per row and once per column. Test the direct case first: if the row and column of the question mark already contain four different letters, the fifth is the answer. Otherwise fix one neighbouring cell and carry the result back.
The General Academic Module
The subject module tests academic reasoning: research methodology, business and operations models, applied physics reasoning, quantitative and vector reasoning, data interpretation, statistics and probability, and academic text reasoning. Questions are answerable without specialist knowledge, but they reward clean reasoning under time pressure.
How to prepare
- Learn the rules first. Most lost marks come from not knowing what a task type allows, not from difficulty.
- Practise in short, timed blocks. About 60-75 seconds per item is a realistic budget.
- Review every mistake and label it: rule not known, misread, too slow, or guess.
- Build up to full mocks in exam conditions - no notes, no tools.
- Revise the shortcuts in the final week rather than learning new material.

Common questions about the dMAT
Can I use a calculator or take notes?
No. The official preparation materials state plainly that you may not take notes throughout the exam and that no helping tools are available. Practise the same way, on screen only.
Should I guess?
The official instructions for Figure Sequences and Latin Squares say to guess if you do not know an answer. No negative marking is mentioned in the preparation materials.
How long is the exam?
The preparation materials describe about three hours of testing with a 30 minute break between the two parts; the official site describes the appointment as about three and a half hours.
Will the exam explain each task type?
Only briefly. The official note says the detailed instructions are in the preparation materials and that the exam shows short reminders, so learn the rules before test day.
