IELTS Speaking ยท Part 1

IELTS Speaking Part 1 questions

Forty Part 1 topics in the real format, with sample answers for the two topics almost every candidate gets: hometown and work or studies.

The Part 1 answer formula

Part 1 lasts 4-5 minutes. The examiner asks about 10-12 short questions on two or three familiar topics. Aim for 2-3 sentences per answer:

  1. Answer directly: "Yes, quite a lot." / "I'm a student."
  2. Add a reason or detail: "...because..." / "...especially..."
  3. Add an example or contrast (optional): "For example..." / "...though I do miss..."

Don't give one-word answers, and don't give a speech. Natural, extended answers score well for Fluency and Coherence.

Sample answers

Topic: your hometown

Where is your hometown?

I'm from Nagpur, a fairly large city right in the centre of India. It's best known for its oranges, and it gets incredibly hot in summer, but it's also quite green, with lots of lakes and parks.

What do you like most about living there?

Probably the pace of life. It's big enough to have good colleges and shopping, but it doesn't feel as rushed or crowded as Mumbai or Delhi, so you can get across town in twenty minutes.

Has your hometown changed much in recent years?

Quite a lot, actually. The metro opened a few years ago, and a lot of the old single-storey houses near my area have been replaced by apartment blocks. It's more convenient now, though I do miss some of the old street markets.

Would you like to live there in the future? Why or why not?

In the long run, yes. I'm planning to study abroad first, but my family is there, and I can imagine coming back once I have some international experience.

Topic: work or studies

Do you work or are you a student?

I'm a student. I'm in the final year of a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, and I'm also preparing applications for a master's in Germany.

Why did you choose that subject or job?

I've always enjoyed taking things apart to see how they work - I used to dismantle old radios as a kid - so engineering felt like a natural choice. Mechanical engineering also opens doors in a lot of different industries.

What do you find most difficult about it?

Honestly, the workload in the final year. Juggling a project, exams and applications at the same time is tough, so I've had to get much better at planning my week.

What would you like to do in the future?

I'd like to work in renewable energy, ideally designing wind turbines. Germany is one of the leaders in that field, which is partly why I want to study there.

These are examples to study, not answers to memorise. Examiners notice memorised answers, so use your own true details.
